MacRumors Thread 500

I'm an Apple nerd. I've mentioned it before. And there's something Apple-related I've been sitting on for awhile now.

MacRumors is where I get my Apple updates and info. Around their forums, there's a famous thread. It's referred to by its number, thread 500.

I'm not going to say too much about it here. Just go over and check out a few of the comments about this "gimmick," "toy," and "not exactly revolutionary" device. Today, over 100 million have been sold.

Not many people in this world truly think outside the box. Not many people can see a truly revolutionary thing when it is in front of them. What are you doing that the majority of people think is crazy? How is your church risking looking foolish because you know you'll change the world?

Great post... very, very interesting to think about.

It is also very encouraging when you feel like you have ideas that most may say will never work.

thanks.

Wow. Great point. I still think that the little gadget is overpriced, but I think that's more because I'm neither an Apple or music fanatic. That being said, there will always be skeptics and people we can't reach with certain techniques. That's why it's good that we have so many churches and so many different approaches, becoming all things to all men.

I think the sad thing is that Apple _didn't_ create anything new. They just marketed it better than anyone else. It has a good interface design (I hear) and it looks pretty. The only revolution was in terms of fashion, not technology.

Something that Apple does that no other company does better, is to really consider the user. Their products really appeal to the user visually. They consider who's going to be using their products and don't expect them to know everything about them in order to use their devices.

I think as the church, we don't always consider the "user." I mean the non-believers. We sometimes assume that non-believers already know our theology and we use Christian jargon and create a sub-culture that is hard to understand.

It's interesting when you read the THREAD 500 most people are negative saying that it will never take off....hindsight is 20/20!!!!

Great post!

Wow. Just...wow. I was working in a mac-based middle school at the time and folks there were drooling - I never even heard this attitude (though I guess I did here a bit of the PDA complaints). This one's getting sent to the leaders of my congregation, with the message, "Gang, quite-often the naysayers are WRONG."

Apple is also good at completely turning people off through their marketing. Unfortunately, so are a lot of churches -- albeit with less Justin Long.
