Firing the Help Poll

Which of these would most likely cause you to 'fire' a volunteer?Last week we asked about that tricky situation of disposing of volunteer help that's not so helpful. What would push you over the edge and ask a volunteer to stop volunteering? 54% thought drawings of Easter Bunnies on the cross in the first grade Sunday School class would be worthy of a firing. The newsletter editor using the word "sucks" repeatedly received the next highest votes with 18%, which isn't very encouraging. Less encouraging is the 13% who wanted to boot a volunteer driver for racking up a speeding ticket while driving for a youth event.

Confession time: That was me.

This week we ask how churches are using the time-honored method of phone book advertising.

At least you didn't get pulled over IN THE CHURCH VAN with the logos... and get spotted by a fellow staff member with a cell phone camera!

I think a missing option was: Undermines the ministry of the church.

Ummm.... Geez Brad, what kind of priorities do your blog readers have anyway? Easter bunny on a cross whatever. Bad Coffee? Fire that loser!!!

I've gotta tell you that I'm not surprised by this, but I'm also disheartened at how roughly our churches treated the person who used the word "sucks". I'm certainly aware that we should stand out above the culture, but seriously - firing them for it, you've got to be kidding.

I'm imagining this context in the newsletter:

'This week our youth group hit the road and worked at a food bank to get in touch with the more needy people in our community. They found that it really sucks to be poor.'

At the end of the day, people who are supposedly trying to model Christ, and reach those who are far from God are more concerned about the word "sucks" than about the starving poor in their own back yard.

An abomination.

i've been pulled over in a church van... oh and i wasn't insured on it. haha... but the cop didn't know that.

I SHOULD have been pulled over in the church van on a road trip to Southern California to a youth camp. I was barrelling down the freeway at 90+ mph to keep up with the youth pastor. I think the only reason I didn't get pulled over for reckless driving was because I was in SoCal, where it's a part of the culture.

Hey gang, Jesus here. Just wanted to clear things up real quick... "sucks" is ok to use. Thanks. I'll get back to work now.
