This is a fantastic program idea. Mainly, pastors just need to know how to begin. It can be a scary endeavor, delving into the "digital unknown."
A new tool may also be able to help: SendingWord. It allows a church admin to set send a message (news, liturgy info, scripture passages, etc.) via the site and it will disperse the info via Facebook, Twitter, text message, email and digital voice--whatever the congregates choose. It's a one-stop shop and really helps engage the community.
Best of luck to everyone out there. This is an important part of modern ministry!

I've been teaching a "Facebook for Churches" type workshop at a community college in Nebraska with great response.
I've been pleasantly surprised at the range of participants, from mainline pastors to priests, Evangelical church secretaries, youth pastors, lay ministry leaders, etc.
If no one's offering such training in your community, I'd bet a CMS reader would be capable of teaching workshops like this.

This is all still so new. I think the challenge is getting church leaders to embrace the technology before their congregation does. I know it's difficult to see the benefit of, say, twitter when only two people in the church are actively using it. That's the hardest part, I think.

Why not right? Social and religious discussions are commonplace and happen almost daily in one capacity or the other. Whether it's someone posting a quote from the Bible or wishing someone well, religion does have its place on social networks. Glad to see that the Church is recognizing this and making moves to engage. Nice article. The bootcamp is an especially nice idea....

Tony, I'll be honest that when I first heard about the first? bootcamp you did (in Minneapolis?) I was skeptical that it would get much of a response. My experience is that most pastors who have an interest in social media think they can figure it out on their own, and the rest don't think social media is worth their time.
So, way to go on providing these bootcamps, helping pastors to understand their value, and making it worth their while!

The San Diego Boot Camp was cancelled and will be rescheduled at a later date (per Doug Pagitt).
