You Know You’re in Church Communications If…

2008_09_22youknow.jpgAdmit it, if you’re reading this site, you have a little indention in your head from all the times you’ve smashed it against your desk in frustration. You’re sick and tired of being sick and tired. And sometimes you think church marketing is fantastic compared to how much working in church communications sucks.

Well, we’ve got the resource for you. It all started as something to share at MinistryCOM. The ideas (and lots more) came from a thread in the Church Marketing Lab. Add in a little editing and the sharp design of Michael Buckingham and you’ve got a beautiful PDF of the top 20 ways to know if you’re in church communications. It was first presented at MinistryCOM 2008, and now it’s here for our readers to download:

You Know You’re in Church Communications If… (PDF, 176 KB, 6 pages)

Note: The download is free, though you’re welcome to pay whatever you want. Enter $0 in the price field and the credit card fields will go away. Unless you opt out, you will be added to our email list.

Oh man! this list nails it. I have actually done the thing with fonts. I have a vendetta against Papyrus. It is like Christians believe that if Jesus was on Earth today and writing English, it would look like Papyrus.

Took the exam. Guilty as charged. There are a ton of things on the list I have done.

I thought this was so funny! I definately have rushed projects only for them to not be used. And the only reason my logo is used is because I threaten really bad things if wasn’t on every project. Is that unchristian? lol
and “this will only take a minute” is right up there with “oh, just do what you want”!
“cause the moment you do, everyone has an opinion!
I guess I’m in church communications!

Egad! I find myself distracted from worship nearly on a weekly basis because I’m proofreading! And there’s always the ‘scholar’ that reminds you the one time you forget to capitalize ‘Lord’ or ‘You’ or some other pronoun.

“You and the senior pastor have conflicting definitions of the word ‘deadline’.”
    How true this is….

This is pretty funny! I feel this way a lot.
But I also think it was a little bitter . . . not to be Pollyanna, but what about some positive ones? I know God made me to be in church communications, and no job (volunteer or paid) has ever given me more joy.
Like, “You know you’re in Church Communications if . . .
You firmly believe that using funky typefaces is a form of evangelism.
You can render a pastor speechless with a photo.
Whenever you read a Psalm, you envision a really cool layout for it.
    You know who Bezalel is.
You get to take somebody’s passion for Jesus and spread it throughout a whole community.
    . . . etc.
