Favorite Marketing Book

January 30, 2006 by

I was sitting down to write some new polls today and I had a good one about favorite marketing books. But then I realized a poll listing four books wouldn’t be a very good poll. It’d be much more helpful to just ask people about their favorite marketing books. So what are your favorite marketing books? And bonus question: How have they helped you with church marketing?

For my part, I was thinking the poll might include something by Seth Godin, something from the Simply Strategic series, something by Malcolm Gladwell and Church Marketing 101 (which is kind of cheating since it’s not out yet). Of course that leaves out Freakonomics, The Cluetrain Manifesto, anything by Tom Peters, Peter Drucker, Jim Collins or George Barna… and now you’re beginning to see why this would have made such a bad poll.

Well, my personal book pool is very small lately so I may be limited in what I am able to suggest.
But, that being said, I loved “Purple Cow” by Seth Godin and might re-read it again soon. I also liked Pyromarketing quite a bit.

I once heard it suggested that “Green Eggs and Ham” by Dr. Seuss was the greatest marketing book ever written. In the book, “Sam I am” is asked over 25 times whether he likes green eggs and ham. The message: persistence pays off…

I have been reading Church Marketing 101, and have to say I am a little disappointed. In the original post, I saw you mention Freakonomics, which is a good read, although not necessarily a marketing book. I too, as an above poster stated, have been pleased with PURPLE COW by Seth Godin. I am looking forward, however, to foraging though TIPPING POINT by Malcolm Gladwell and GUERRILLA MARKETING by Jay Conrad Levinson. Anyone have any ideas about those?
