MinistryCOM Church Communications Conference

May 17, 2005 by

Last month we asked about getting church marketers together, and there was a lot of interest. One possible opportunity might be MinistryCOM. It’s a ministry communications conference put on by Main Street and held Sept. 15-16 in Houston.

It is put on by Main Street, a company that specializes in web sites for churches, though they’ve assured us that they’re not presenting or promoting their own products. Interestingly, the web site notes that registration is open to church communications professionals and volunteers only—no vendors.

I would like to know more… especially if you swing some sort of event. Don’t know if Houston would be in the budget, but one never knows.
I just found your site, and “church marketing” has been an interest/passion of mine ever since I started typing the bulletin entries for a church I attended about 10 years ago. Now I am the Producer of Creative and Organizational Beauty for a church here in Kansas City, and I’m glad to find likeminded folks who agree that cheesy clip art and hit-them-over-the-head-with-the-point graphics are at least a bad idea and at best should be relegated to the 1950s.
I believe that words matter, and that bad (i.e. slick, disingenuous, filled with cliches and smiley stock people) marketing does nothing to further the gospel or actually help people with furthering their lives in the way of Jesus.
I’ll keep checking in… you guys keep blogging.

What’s wrong with smiley stock people? Sometimes they convey a message of warmth and joy that “real” photos… at least without the aid of a professional… don’t.
